The word "Hamsa" comes from the Hebrew word for the number five, and is considered to have special magical powers that bring good luck. In many traditions, the number five can be depicted by an open human hand  to ward off evil. In the Jewish religion the Hamsa symbolizes the Hand of God or the Hand of Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, while In Christianity the Hamsa is associated with the hand of the Virgin Mary which protects pregnant women.
